Home Dental Care Tips from Your Frisco Dentist
What you do between visits matters just as much as what we do in the chair.
Your Daily Routine Makes the Difference
Professional cleanings are essential, but the health of your teeth and gums depends largely on what happens at home every day. At Stonelake Family Dentistry, we believe in empowering our Frisco patients with the knowledge and tools to maintain great oral health between visits.
Good home care doesn’t have to be complicated. A consistent routine of brushing, flossing, and smart dietary choices can prevent the vast majority of dental problems. Here’s what we recommend.
Home Care Essentials
Brush Twice Daily
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush for at least two minutes, covering all surfaces. Replace your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles start to fray.
Floss Every Day
Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. If traditional floss is difficult, try floss picks or a water flosser.
Watch Your Diet
Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks. When you do indulge, rinse with water afterward. Crunchy fruits and vegetables, cheese, and plenty of water all support oral health.
Frequently Asked Questions
Electric or manual toothbrush — which is better?
Both can be effective, but electric toothbrushes with built-in timers make it easier to brush for the full two minutes and can be more effective at removing plaque. We’re happy to recommend specific models.
How important is mouthwash?
Mouthwash can be a helpful addition to your routine but isn’t a substitute for brushing and flossing. We may recommend a specific formula based on your needs — such as fluoride rinse for cavity prevention or an antibacterial rinse for gum health.
When should I replace my toothbrush?
Every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Also replace it after recovering from an illness to avoid reintroducing bacteria.
